About

Wildlife Haven Builders is a hands-on, eco-friendly programme in which teams build sustainable bird boxes, insect hotels and bat boxes that give local wildlife a safe place to live.

Before building can begin, teams must earn their materials by completing eco challenges on tablets. The challenges are creative, mental and physical, at varying levels of difficulty, and teams deploy their best people to the bird, bat and insect challenges they are most likely to win.

Strong leadership, strategy and communication make all the difference, as teams can gain an advantage by managing several challenges at once.

With materials secured, teams divide the roles and build three wildlife habitats from 3D plans, then decorate the timber structures to agreed criteria. All the finished habitats can be donated to a local community group, school or nature reserve.

Learning outcomes

Wildlife Haven Builders is enjoyable, practical and inclusive, with a positive local impact. Each team's success comes down to clear roles and sensible choices about which challenges to take on.

Participants learn about local ecology and how human activity affects birds, bats and insects, and discover simple actions that help those populations thrive.

The relaxed format is an excellent icebreaker. Teams weigh risk against reward, and with the clock running, people need to speak up about the challenges they can confidently complete. Quieter colleagues often shine in the challenges that suit them best.

Trust builds as each challenge is won, and people come to appreciate one another's abilities. Seeing the finished habitats go to a good home gives the day a lasting purpose.
