About

Turbo Assembly Line is a hands-on lesson in lean thinking disguised as a race. Every team receives a jumble of model components and the challenge of assembling a range of snap-together concept cars in record time.

The key is flow. Teams must design efficient assembly lines and reduce the time of every new build. There is a twist, however: each car has its own style and bolt-on extras, so the line has to remain flexible.

Quality is as important as speed. Every model, from saloon to SUV, must meet exacting customer standards, and one small error can send a team down the leaderboard.

As each round is reviewed, attention moves from individual team times to sharing best practice across the room, aiming for the best combined production time. The group’s final result is measured against the best times ever achieved.

Learning outcomes

Turbo Assembly Line allows teams to explore, practise and properly understand best practice and process improvement in an engaging setting. It is a natural fit for operations, manufacturing and any team focused on efficiency.

It demonstrates how a process improves when everyone follows a consistent method and takes ownership of the changes. Small adjustments, such as moving one person or reordering a step, often make a dramatic difference that is visible immediately on the clock.

Reviewing each round helps teams identify bottlenecks, test new ideas and measure the impact, building habits of continuous improvement they can apply at work. Teams that involve everyone in the review usually find the biggest gains.

It is an excellent platform for discussion within a context of practical fun, and the sleek, tactile car models bring out the inner child in everyone.
