About

Customer Colour Canvas is a relaxed, creative way to see your customers through fresh eyes. Each team receives a 3D object to use as its canvas, together with black, white and primary-coloured paints.

The session opens with the basics of contrast, artistic style and colour theory, and a look at how colours influence our emotions.

Teams then agree a customer profile and decide how to express it in colour. They choose an artistic style, sketch a plan and bring their 3D object to life with paint. The profile gives every artistic decision a clear purpose.

When the pieces are finished, everyone walks the room gallery-style, viewing each artwork and discussing the customer it represents. Different teams often imagine the same type of customer in surprisingly different ways.

Learning outcomes

Participants discover the connection between colour and emotion and how it shapes the way people feel about a product or brand. The same colour can mean very different things to different people.

Customer profiling becomes light-hearted and full of discussion, as teams debate who their customer really is and what matters to them. Questions such as 'what does our customer value most?' lead to lively, useful debate.

Creativity takes over as teams translate a personality into colours and styles, keeping the conversation focused and enjoyable.

To succeed, team members must listen to one another, respect different opinions and agree a direction within a limited time. Those same skills help teams align on customers and priorities at work, and many groups carry these conversations straight into their next planning meeting.
