About

Bring your group together for a hands-on creative challenge with real heart. Teams brainstorm, assign roles, and set to work designing, building, and decorating a bookshelf from the ground up, with every finished piece ultimately donated to a local organisation in need.

Half of each team tackles a themed wall mural that becomes the artistic backdrop for the bookshelf, while the other half joins a guided decoupage workshop to transform a plain shelf into a genuine work of art. The two elements come together into one cohesive, meaningful creation.

Before handing over their finished bookshelf, each team shares a short presentation revealing the story and symbolism behind their design. The experience closes with teams donating their creations to a local community partner, turning creativity into lasting, tangible impact.

Learning outcomes

This program builds awareness around the quiet but powerful role that resources like books play in education. Teams discover how small, deliberate actions can meaningfully reduce resource shortages and help build long-term success in under-served communities and the organisations that serve them.

Working in split roles, participants practise coordination, creative collaboration, and craft-based problem solving as they move between mural design and decoupage techniques. The structure encourages teams to communicate across sub-groups and merge two different creative outputs into a single, unified result.

Beyond the activity itself, groups are encouraged to collect books to fill their shelves at the moment of donation and to keep contributing over time. This extends the program's impact well past the day itself, creating an ongoing connection between the team and the community they support.

Program flow

  1. Welcome and Team Briefing

Facilitators introduce the challenge, explain the donation mission, and divide participants into balanced teams.

  2. Role Assignment and Planning

Each team brainstorms their bookshelf concept and splits into two sub-groups to handle the mural and the decoupage design.

  3. Mural Design Workshop

One sub-group designs and paints a themed wall mural that will serve as the visual backdrop for the finished bookshelf.

  4. Decoupage Workshop and Shelf Decoration

The other sub-group attends a guided decoupage session and applies the techniques directly onto the bookshelf structure.

  5. Assembly and Final Touches

Both sub-groups reunite to combine the mural and decorated shelf into one finished, cohesive piece.

  6. Team Presentations and Donation

Each team presents the story behind their artwork before officially donating their bookshelf to a local organisation in need.

Frequently asked questions

Is any artistic skill required to take part?

No prior art or craft experience is needed. Facilitators guide every team step by step through the mural and decoupage techniques.

Can this activity run both indoors and outdoors?

Yes, the program is flexible and can be delivered indoors, outdoors, or in a combination of both depending on your venue.

What happens to the bookshelves after the program?

Each completed bookshelf is donated to a local community organisation or group identified as being in need of educational resources.

Can our group supply books to go with the shelves?

Absolutely. Many groups choose to collect and contribute books so the donated shelves arrive ready to use, with some teams continuing to support the partner organisation afterwards.

Is this activity competitive or collaborative?

It blends both elements. Teams work collaboratively internally while a friendly, creative spirit of comparison runs across teams.
