This activity shows how important clear communication is to working together well. Each team has to build an exact copy of a model, but the person building it can’t see the real one. You’re sure to learn and laugh.

ibuild is fun and brings people together. This activity for building a team focuses on language, feedback, and how important it is to make a step-by-step plan for a project. It’s also a great way to show that everyone on a team is important to its success as a whole.

People are broken up into small groups. Their goal was to copy a model using simple parts and to do it in a certain amount of time. Teams start by assigning roles, and then they come up with their own ways to communicate. Each team’s designated builder never gets to see the original model, so these strategies are the key to winning. A chain of team members must pass on all the important information. Team members switch roles halfway through the event.

The rules of this game have been tweaked to show the most important rules for getting information across correctly. You can use the same ideas to improve how you talk to your customers or between teams or departments in your company. At the end, we have a short debriefing session where people can talk about their experiences and what they’ve learned.
